Keratin Bonds: Why Every Salon Should Offer Them
The clients I kept losing
Keratin bonds are the extension method that converts your time-poor clients, suits almost every hair type and frees up your books, which makes them one of the most profitable services a salon can add.
For years I offered wefts and tapes. I recommended them to clients every day, and a lot of those clients never booked. When I asked why, the answer was nearly always the same: they couldn't be bothered coming back in every few weeks for maintenance.
Then I discovered keratin bonds. They were the perfect option for those time-poor clients. And something I didn't expect happened once I started offering them: my existing weft and tape clients wanted the low-maintenance option too, and many of them switched to bonds.
The numbers tell the story. With tapes and wefts we'd do 5 to 10 extension clients a month at Coastal Blondes, if we were lucky. Now we do around 35 keratin bond clients a month.
I already do tapes. Why add keratin bonds?
Not every client suits one extension method, so offering more methods means you can say yes to more clients. Keratin bonds fill the gaps that tapes, wefts and nano beads leave:
- Suitable for all hair types. Fine, medium and thick hair can all wear bonds.
- Gentle on natural hair. Applied and cared for correctly, they don't cause breakage.
- The most discreet method. Small, individual bonds sit closest to the client's own hair, so they're the hardest to spot.
- Lower maintenance. No in-salon maintenance appointments between sets.
- The most customisable colour. Tapes and wefts come in block colours or set highlight/lowlight and ombré blends. With bonds you hand-pick every tone. For blondes we recommend at least 3 colours, and you can add brighter pops around the face or through the back to mimic a balayage and lift the whole look.
If you have clients who love the idea of extensions but hate the upkeep of tapes, wefts or beads, bonds are the method you're missing.
Are keratin bonds damaging to the hair?
No. Keratin bonds are not damaging when they're applied correctly and the client looks after them at home.
I was trained to believe the opposite. I was taught bonds damaged the hair, and that belief stopped me offering them for a long time. It wasn't until I did my own research and went on a course that I saw the truth: damage comes down to how the bonds are applied and how they're cared for, not the method itself.
That was the mind-blowing moment for me. If you've avoided bonds because of what you were taught years ago, it's worth taking a second look.
Who suits keratin bonds, and who doesn't?
Most clients are suitable for keratin bonds. There are only two types of client I steer away from:
- Clients with excessive hair loss who are still shedding. Bonds attach to the natural hair, so they'll fall out with it.
- Clients who won't do the home care. Bonds rely on the client looking after them. Without that, the hair becomes a matted, knotted mess, and that is what causes damage.
A good consultation covers both. Be honest with the client about the home care commitment before you book them in.
How long do keratin bonds last?
Keratin bonds last between 3 and 6 months. Where a client sits in that range depends on:
- their hair type
- their lifestyle
- how fast their hair grows
- how fast their hair sheds
- how well they look after the bonds at home.
It's a case-by-case result. Some of our clients get 3 months and some get the full 6.
There's no in-salon maintenance in between, which makes bonds a natural fit for clients with low-maintenance colour. They aren't coming back every 6 to 8 weeks for colour anyway, and they like it that way. Bonds let them keep their low-maintenance routine and still have the hair they want.
Why keratin bonds are more profitable for your salon
Keratin bonds earn more per visit, free up your column and lift your retail sales. That's why they've become our biggest extension service.
What a typical bond service looks like
A standard volume set is 30 to 40 bonds, depending on how sparse the hair is and how much volume the client wants. It takes 1 to 2 hours to apply, depending on the number of bonds and whether you use full or half bonds. We offer 16-inch and 20-inch lengths, and a volume set averages $800 to $1,100 including hair and application. A full head is over $2,000.
Bonds vs tapes: more money from fewer visits
Here's how a full-head tape client compares with a full-head bond client at our salon:
|
|
Tape client |
Bond client |
|---|---|---|
|
Visits |
4 |
2 (a fresh set about every 4 months) |
|
Application and maintenance |
about $720 |
included in each set |
|
Hair |
about $1,200 |
included in each set |
|
Revenue |
about $1,920 |
$4,000+ |
|
Extra services |
|
cut and blow-dry, $130 to $150 |
The bond appointment is longer, but you see the client half as often and earn roughly double. Bonds can last up to 6 months, but most clients come back closer to 4.
More extension clients on the same books
Tape and weft clients need maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks. As your client list grows, that upkeep fills your week and limits how many new clients you can take. Bond clients don't need maintenance visits, so you can look after far more of them. Yes, you'll see more clients, but you'll make more money from each one without the cost of constant maintenance.
Specialising in bonds also brings new clients to you. People are finding us because we're known for keratin bonds.
Price it on your own numbers
Your application and removal prices should come from your own figures, not a competitor's price list:
- Work out the hourly rate your salon needs to be profitable. Ours ranges from $150 to $190 per hour, depending on the stylist.
- Time how long each stylist takes to apply 10 bonds, then 20.
- Work out how many bonds that stylist applies in an hour. I can apply up to 40 an hour; others are slower, and that's fine.
- Combine your hourly rate and your timing. That's your magic number.
If you have apprentices, you can offer removal at a lower price and still protect your margins.
No dead stock in the cupboard
Bulk buying hair means money tied up in the cupboard, waiting for a client who needs that exact colour. You never know how long it will sit there.
With Curated Hair you can order from just 5 bonds per colour, instead of the industry standard of 25 to 30. You order and pay only for what that client needs, and the client's deposit covers the cost, so it never comes out of your budget.
Small orders don't limit your colour work either. A 30-bond volume set could use 6 different shades, with 5 bonds of each.
Retail sales come with every set
Bonds lifted our retail sales straight away. If a bond slips out, it can't be put back in, and the client has to buy new hair. So clients protect their investment. They generally buy shampoo, conditioner and leave-in products, and almost every one buys the brush, because that's their maintenance at home.
